The Pilot Internship Program (PIP) includes the following areas of involvement and responsibility during the NDCMP (North Dakota Cloud Modification Program): Duties of a regular crew member, both on the ground and in the air; Record keeping of all seeding events, times and materials expended; Maintenance of seeding equipment and materials; General aircraft maintenance; Conduct of seeding missions according to project guidelines; Visual surveillance of the weather; Representing the project to the public; and other duties as required to meet project objectives. Operations are conducted around the clock, seven days per week, as weather conditions dictate.Intern Co Pilots will be required to rotate to another base for cloud top seeding experience and must be able to transport themselves to other bases. A pre-project ground school and orientation will be conducted in Bismarck on May 29-31, 2024; all project personnel are required to attend. There will be an ice-breaker social the evening of May 28th. The field phase of the project begins at noon on June 1, 2024 and continues as weather dictates, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, through the project's conclusion on August 31, 2024. Allowance will be made for interns needing to return to school during the latter half of August. Interns are allowed to take unpaid vacation during the project, to a maximum of 7 days. However, only 1 intern is authorized to be gone at a time, so all requests may not be granted.Locations: Bowman, ND; Stanley, ND; Watford City, ND; and Williston, ND

Minimum Qualifications

Aviation student with multi-engine commercial instrument rating completed by April 30, 2024.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of University of North Dakota's AtSc 252 Applied Weather Modification class is preferred. Motivation, flight hours, and related work experience may also be considered.

Assist radar meteorologists in the direction of cloud seeding operations from radar field offices located in Bowman and Stanley, ND, and prepare daily convective forecasts. Operations are conducted around the clock, seven days per week, as weather conditions dictate. Job requirements include the operation of a 5-cm digital Doppler weather radar equipped with IRIS and TITAN software, direction of seeding aircraft, use of two-way radio, data recording, and making daily convective forecasts. Intern Meteorologists will be required to rotate project sites during the summer. The NDARB (North Dakota Atmospheric Resource Board) will conduct a pre-project ground school and orientation in Bismarck on May 29-31, 2024; all project personnel are required to attend. Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be majors in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or Related Field. Good communication skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of meteorological course work, especially courses in radar meteorology, weather modification, cloud physics and forecasting, and computer knowledge of Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix-based operating systems and software are also strong qualifying factors.

Operate/interpret 5-cm digital Doppler weather radars equipped with IRIS and TITAN software and simultaneously direct multiple aircraft for cloud seeding operations. Identification of suitable clouds; clear communication with aircraft via two-way radio; operation of Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix-based software; pilot briefings; meteorological record keeping; direction and supervision of intern meteorologists; supervision of chemical inventory; and assisting with radar calibrations and maintenance. Other duties include monitoring local weather conditions, interaction with National Weather Service personnel and the public, and data entry.
